Considering buying travel insurance? Learn from Adam Davies’ story, who faced unexpected medical expenses after a Boxing Day crash. Despite having travel insurance from Lloyds Bank, Adam’s family had to raise £20,000 for his treatment due to coverage limitations. Take heed and review your policy’s terms and conditions carefully to ensure adequate coverage for unforeseen circumstances. Protect yourself and your loved ones with comprehensive travel insurance
Adam Davies, 28, suffered serious injuries, including a fractured skull, in the Boxing Day crash. Adam’s family has already raised £20,000 for his treatment. They are warning others to carefully review their insurance policy’s terms and conditions. This is to ensure they are adequately covered. Adam is from Dinas Cross, Pembrokeshire. He will be facing large medical expenses that are not covered by his travel insurance from Lloyds Bank.
Adam’s sister, Jess Davies, 30, stated that her brother had global travel insurance. However, the policy would not cover his medical expenses. This is because he had been outside the UK for more than 31 days.
Adam remains hospitalized on the island of Koh Samui. He is there after the crash on Ko Tao, with his parents by his bedside.
He sustained multiple injuries in the crash. These injuries included fractures to his skull, bleeding on the brain, a punctured lung, broken ribs, a broken clavicle, a broken scapula, and a fractured ankle.
“He was on a little island and he was driving a scooter and he just, I think came round a bend and just went straight into an electric pole,” said Jess.
“We didn’t find out until it was 24 hours after. He had to be shipped to another island because there was no hospital there and he had multiple injuries, some major injuries, and his insurance wouldn’t cover him,” said Jess.
Through an online fundraising page, Jess has been able to raise £20,000 for her brother. However, she is urging other travelers to exercise caution and be mindful of their insurance policies.
“It was something in the small print. He took out an insurance policy that enabled him to travel worldwide, that’s how it was sold. But it would only insure him for one country for 31 consecutive days.” said Jess.
A family friend, Lucie Macleod, 23, emphasized the importance of thoroughly reading insurance policies. No one expected Adam’s policy to contain a clause that would prevent it from covering his medical expenses. This is why it is important to read insurance policies thoroughly.
“Nobody would have ever thought that one of the caveats would be that every 30 days you would have to land back in the UK. It was worldwide insurance for a year. It seemed convenient to have the same bank and same insurance. Everybody should read the small print.” said Lucie.
Adam Davies received help as follows.
Jess has expressed her gratitude to the hundreds of people who have contributed over £20,000 for her brother’s medical treatment.
Alison and Graham, Adam’s parents, are planning to remain in Thailand. They are doing this until Adam is fit enough to travel back to Wales.
A spokesperson for Lloyds Bank, Adam’s insurer, said: “We would always encourage customers looking to travel abroad for an extended period to check the terms and conditions of their insurance, whether that’s been provided through their bank account or purchased separately.
“Most providers, including Lloyds Bank, will make it clear what is covered under your policy when you first take it out and send annual reminders to make sure it remains suitable for you.”
