The Kandy Esala Perahera is an annual event in Sri Lanka. It consists of a grand procession of elephants. It is held in the month of Esala (August) in Kandy. This festival is also known as “Dalada Mangalya” because of the visitation of Dalada, who resides in Sri Dalada Maliga.
The purpose of Purana Kandy Esala Perahera is to visit Lord Buddha’s teeth and receive blessings from God. The first procession was held in the early 4th century AD.
This Buddhist festival combines Kumbal Perahera and Randoli Perahera.

The word Perahera means procession and these two processions last for five days.
There are also special festivals and events in the days leading up to the Esala Perahera and the final water-cutting or Diwa Perahera.
The Kandy Esala Perahera is a spectacular event that attracts visitors from all over the world. A group of elephants leads the procession, each carrying a different decoration. Dancers and musicians follow the elephants.
Visitors from Sri Lanka and the world flock to Kandy for this spectacular festival of high religious significance.
