North Korea is destroying a floating hotel and resort once hailed as a symbol of inter-Korean peace. North Korea Mount Kumgang, a Korean name for “diamond” is a site for rare moments of reconciliation between the citizens of the two countries.

The news comes months after unconfirmed reports that buildings at the complex have been demolished.
The Onjonggak Rest House, located at the foot of Mount Kumgang, has attracted much attention from families previously separated from the south and north. A South Korean company was responsible for managing the tourism zone.
Once a luxury resort floating above Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the hotel was moved to Kumgang and opened to tourists in 2000.
The official also stated that North Korea is closely monitoring whether it dismantles the Family Reunification Center and the Kumgang Community Center.
Tourists were stopped after a North Korea ‘n soldier shot and killed a South Korean woman who crossed the border into a military zone in the Kumgang mountain tourist area. This happened in the year 2008.
